HyMove is an initiative by the Province of Gelderland, the Arnhem-Nijmegen Urban Region and the Municipality of Arnhem. Connexxion, a number of regional businesses and the HAN University of Applied Sciences are also involved in the project. It has been developed in order to gain practical experience of using hydrogen in means of transport and to allow the public to become familiar with the new fuel. It is expected that hydrogen will be in large-scale use in several decades, but its introduction is not yet possible without government assistance. The first phase of the project consists of building a hydrogen bus, purchasing a number of hydrogen cars and installing a refuelling point for hydrogen at an existing filling station in Arnhem.
The project in Arnhem will provide a great deal of experience with hydrogen, from which other projects in this country will be able to profit. For example, new technology will be tested, experience will be gained with licences and safety precautions for fuelling with hydrogen and research will be conducted into the environmental benefits of running on hydrogen.
In addition, HyMove will increase the reputation of the Arnhem region, as the media will be paying a great deal of attention to the project. With this project, Arnhem is profiling itself as a region that is actively seeking solutions to the environmental problems caused by traffic. Furthermore Arnhem, which has been designated as one of the three hydrogen regions in the Netherlands, will later on be the first to profit from the actual breakthrough of hydrogen. There will also be benefits for regional employment, the hydrogen industry in Arnhem and the HAN as a centre of knowledge and education.
The next phase of the project provides for an expansion in the number of buses and cars running on hydrogen, and in the commercial development of the technology tested during the project. It is therefore necessary for the running of hydrogen-powered buses to be included in the new public transport concession.
