In the view of the parties taking the initiative in HyMove, hydrogen – next to electricity – is an energy vector that offers many possibilities for mobile applications and greatly reduces the dependence on oil, coal and nuclear energy. Hydrogen is almost inexhaustibly available and it produces no harmful emissions such as CO, CO2, NOx and soot when it is used as a fuel. Harmful emissions, when compared with vehicles running on fossil fuels, can be reduced by more than 90 percent. The Province of Gelderland, the Arnhem-Nijmegen Urban Region and the Municipality of Arnhem have therefore decided to further investigate the possibilities and benefits of hydrogen as a fuel for the future.

As public transport is an excellent test environment for new fuels and technology, the innovative hydrogen-powered bus is an important part of the project: All the more so because the bus can be used as a moving showpiece for the project and the public can ride in it themselves. Brining hydrogen to people's attention as a fuel for the future is an important objective of HyMove. As well as the bus, the hydrogen filling station plays a crucial role in the project. Most car manufacturers are still very reluctant to produce cars running on hydrogen, because there are few facilities for refuelling with it. Developing an infrastructure for selling hydrogen in Arnhem as well as having the vehicles there makes the chance of running on hydrogen being a success all the greater.
Finally, hydrogen offers economic opportunities for the region. A number of high-tech businesses that supply products and equipment for the production and distribution of hydrogen have been set up in the Province of Gelderland, and in Arnhem in particular. The Automotive Engineering department of the HAN has built up a great deal of expertise in the field of hydrogen and is therefore attractive for new groups of students, including those from other countries.
