The Stichting Zero Emissie Busvervoer [Zero Emission Bus Transport Institute] presented its manifesto to Minister of Infrastructure and Environment Schultz van Haegen during the innovation event that took place on Tuesday 4 October. The manifesto says that all 5000 buses in the Netherlands should be running with zero emissions in 2025. This means in practice that all buses will have to be fitted with electric motors instead of diesel engines. Eventually there will also be many ways of producing the necessary power, such as hydrogen, wind energy or natural gas. The manifesto was presented by Marijke van Haaren, chairperson of the Stichting Zero Emissie Busvervoer and former member of the Gelderland Provincial Executive.
The vast majority of buses being used for public transport in the Netherlands are equipped with internal combustion engines that emit harmful substances that have negative consequences for air quality and for health. The Stichting Zero Emissie Busvervoer, which consists of both public and private parties, is dedicated to emission-free and affordable public bus transport. In order to achieve this goal, all the parties concerned, such as national and local authorities, manufacturers of buses and of energy infrastructure, component suppliers, knowledge institutions and pressure groups, are collaborating. The Stichting Zero Emissie Busvervoer encourages and strengthens the collaboration between all the parties.
