e-Traction develops hub motor for passenger vehicles

With support from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation, e-Traction Europe BV and the Automotive Centre of Expertise at the HAN University of Applied Sciences are developing a revolutionary hub motor for applications in passenger vehicles.

 With support from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation, e-Traction Europe BV and the Automotive Centre of Expertise at the HAN University of Applied Sciences are developing a revolutionary hub motor for applications in passenger vehicles. The prototype, called e-Carin, will be presented to the public for the first time next month at eCarTec 2011 in Munich.

The hub motor replaces the entire drive train – from the engine to the wheels – in an ordinary car. Compact hub motors with integral inverters make more space available in the vehicle for installing a range extender and a battery pack of sufficient size without compromising passenger seating.

To substantiate this claim, the first set of hub motors have now been installed in a passenger vehicle. Laboratory and practical testing is being carried out at the moment in order to further improve the technology and to justify the claims. The public will be able to see the e-Carin prototype vehicle for the first time during eCarTec, from 18 to 30 October. Visitors to the show will be able to have a demonstration ride in the vehicle.
